Kei Harada, a renowned designer, has transformed a traditional porcelain shop and gallery into a modern retail space that pays homage to the rich history of Saikai porcelain. The project, named Oyane Saikaitoki, is located in Hasami Town, Nagasaki, Japan, a place known for its exquisite porcelain. The design is a testament to Harada's ability to blend tradition and innovation, creating a unique retail experience that reflects the spirit of the artists and the materials they use.
The inspiration for this project stemmed from Harada's client's desire to revamp the shop while preserving the essence of Saikai porcelain. Harada's approach was to create a design that could only be realized with this specific client. The result is a complete overhaul of the internal and external structure, with a new entrance built to improve access to the shop located on the basement floor. A large staircase and elevator guide visitors to the shop space, which spans both floors.
What sets Oyane Saikaitoki apart from other retail spaces is its unique use of materials. The outdoor floor and stairs are made from washed-out mortar pottery debris, while the interior walls are made from porcelain sagger, a material used in the firing process of pottery. This innovative use of materials not only pays tribute to the art of porcelain making but also adds a unique aesthetic appeal to the space.
The realization of this design was made possible through a combination of traditional and modern technologies. The steel frame of the building is galvanized and coated with urethane, while the roof is made from Galvalume steel plate. The interior features an acrylic floor coating, a skeleton ceiling, and plywood furniture. The pendant lights, made from porcelain, add a touch of elegance to the space.
Oyane Saikaitoki has been recognized for its innovative design, winning the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2020. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. It is clear that Harada's Oyane Saikaitoki is not just a retail space, but a work of art that showcases the beauty and tradition of Saikai porcelain.
In conclusion, Kei Harada's Oyane Saikaitoki is a testament to the power of innovative design. By blending tradition and modernity, Harada has created a retail space that is not only functional but also a tribute to the art of Saikai porcelain. It is a shining example of how design can transform a space, creating a unique and engaging retail experience.
